Septic arthritis (infectious arthritis) is infectious; it is caused due to infection in the joints. It affects people of all age groups and causes severe pain which is unbearable and results in the swelling of the joints

Septic arthritis (infectious arthritis) is generally caused by bacteria; staphylococci, hemophilus influenzae, gram-negative bacilli, gonococci, staphylococci, and streptococci are some of the bacteria which are responsible for the spread of the disease.  These bacteria enter into the joints through the blood stream.   Those bacteria that cause tuberculosis and Lyme disease are also responsible.  If the persons immune system have weakened as in the case of those suffering from HIV are more vulnerable to the disease.

Moreover in many of the cases the doctor may recommend examinations of the fluids present in the joints of the person suffering from pain. These are done so that that it can be clearly ascertained that the abnormality in the blood is not due to any other factors because in many of the cases the pain might be due to different reasons.
