Treatments for Head Lice:
First you need to be sure that your child has head lice. You can check that by looking for the following symptoms.
Symptoms of Head Lice:
- Your child has an itchy scalp.
- There are red bumps on the scalp and the neck.
- There are live lice on the scalp.
- There are lice eggs or nits on the shafts of hair.
Even if you cannot spot live lice moving on the scalp, but can find nits, then that means that your child has an infestation of lice. Lice can be difficult to spot, but the fact that they are laying eggs, means that there are plenty of them.
Lice: Once confirmed, try not to panic as children can get lice very easily from other classmates, so it is by no means uncommon. One thing that you should do to prevent lice infestations in the future or to weed them out early is to check the child’s hair every week. Try this for yourself too. Early detection is the best way to stop them from spreading.
Medical treatments for Head Lice:
You can buy a good medicated shampoo or a solution that you can apply on your child’s head, to kill the lice. However, you need to speak with a pediatrician to see if these treatments are safe for the child. Sometimes, lice develop immunity to the medicated treatments, and after a few uses very few really get destroyed.
Home Remedies for Head Lice:
- You can try a few home remedies to destroy head lice. However, some people find success in these methods, while others may not find these too effective. We suggest, you try a few to see for yourself.
- For this treatment, buy a bottle each of lavender oil, tea tree oil, and rosemary oil. Pour 20 drops of each in a measuring cup. Mix a part of vinegar and two parts of olive oil. Massage this mixture into your child’s hair and scalp. Leave it overnight, before washing and rinsing the hair in the morning. Use the leftover mixture on the next night.
- If you do not have essential oils, just mix vinegar and olive oil, and massage that into the scalp and hair of the child.
- You must thoroughly wash the towels, sheets, and pillow cases that your child has been using as these might have been infested with nits too. Keep them soaked in hot water and wash well. Keep washing all the combs and hairbrushes regularly too.
