Toothache Remedies

If you’ve got a dreadful toothache, then the best thing to do would be to visit your dentist. He/she can identify the source of pain and treat you accordingly. Chances are that you may have a cavity, decaying tooth or a gum infection, which needs prompt medical attention. But if you’re in a situation where you can’t visit the dentist immediately, then try some of these home remedies to get rid of toothache till you’re able to get proper medical attention.

  • Saline water: Mix some salt in warm water and then rinse your mouth with it. Swish the saline water around your mouth repeatedly as this will sooth your pain. Do this frequently through the day to keep toothache at bay. You can also place salt crystals against the hurting tooth.
  • Clove oil: Cloves and clove oil can work wonders for a tooth ache. Clove oil, which has pain relief properties, is available at most stores and pharmacies. Dab some of this on a piece of cotton wool and place it against the hurting tooth till the oil has been absorbed into the affected area. While doing this, be careful not to rub the dipped-in-oil cotton swab against your tongue as clove oil has a very strong and unpleasant flavor. You may even place a whole clove against the tooth to relieve yourself of the pain.
  • Onion juice: Extract some juice from an onion and soak a cotton swab in it. Place this against the affected tooth to get rid of toothache. This home remedy works well for tooth cavities.
  • Thyme or sage: Mix a teaspoon of thyme or sage in a cup of boiling water. Cover the cup for 10 minutes, so that the herb is infused into the water. Swivel this concoction around your mouth to cure toothache.
  • Garlic: You could either use a cotton swab dipped in garlic juice or make a mouthwash with a crushed garlic clove, some water and vinegar to give you relief.
  • Eucalyptus oil: You could massage your gums and teeth with eucalyptus oil to reduce tooth ache. In fact, eucalyptus oil is good for dental health.
  • Vitamin E oil: Buy a bottle of Vitamin E oil and massage the sore tooth and gums with this. It will help relieve the toothache.

In addition to the above mentioned points you could modify your diet. If you’ve got a toothache, then it would be a good idea to have only soft, mashed food or liquids. Solid food as well as spicy or oily foods can aggravate the pain.
