Sinus and Gum Pain Remedies

Sinus and gum pain usually occur in isolation but if an infection has taken hold of the sinuses, then the resulting inflammation and pain can manifest itself in gum pain as well; however, it is best to see these two problems individually when treating them.

The sinuses are cavities in the face that are filled with air and a certain amount of mucus. They serve the function of warming and humidifying the air we breathe in through the nose and are located in the face where the eyebrows begin, the bridge of the nose and half an inch laterally away from each nostril. Being in the front line of incoming air, which can contain microbes like bacteria, viruses and fungi, microbes and allergens can be caught in the sinus cavities and cause irritation and infections. Allergens can take the form of pollen, dust, and pollutants like cigarette smoke – common items that most people encounter in the air but a few people can have allergies to. Infections can be from a variety of bacteria, viruses and fungi that are breathed in and are trapped in the mucus of the sinus cavities. Mucus is a nutrient rich medium for these bacteria, and though human mucus contains some antibiotic enzymes in it, these are ineffective against some virulent pathogens. The arrival of a foreign object triggers the immune system to start an inflammation, which results in the formation of more mucus to localize the infection. The swelling occurs so that the white blood cells can move into the smaller capillaries, and increases blood flow. Typical infections can just last a few days; however, sometimes our bodies are not strong enough or the infectious microbes are able to fight back. This is when sinusitis becomes a problem with prolonged inflammation and pain in the region making it difficult to breathe, chew or even touch. Antibiotics are required at this point to save the situation from getting worse. Gum pain is the result of a similar infection but the reason that they take hold is because of improper oral hygiene.

All sorts of infections can be fought with the use of herbal remedies - most medicines are usually derived from plant sources. Garlic is one of the really potent antibiotics in nature. Its active ingredient- allacin is able to combat bacteria and viruses. Raw cloves of garlic or garlic soup should be consumed on a daily basis to fight off the infections. For gum infections treatment, the use of cloves that are chewed on or a clove oil mouthwash acts as an antiseptic and anesthetic for the teeth and gums.
