Other common sedative herb teas include chamomile, valerian and catnip. Some doctors are of the opinion that anything that’s alkaline work as soothing agents for chronic hives as it helps to relieve the itch on the skin. Apply milk of magnesia on the hives or coat of calamine lotion helps to cool down the hives and reduce the itch associated with it.  According to herbalists, a strong tea brewed from the leaves and the bark of red alder and applied as a topical application on the affected area helps to reduce hives.
