Menstrual cramps are a common problem in menstruating women and occur along with menstruation. A menstrual camp is not a disease or condition in itself but it can often hamper a woman’s daily routine. Dull throbbing sensations in the lower abdominal region or cramping pain are peculiar indicators of menstrual cramps. The intensity with which menstrual cramps take place differs from woman to woman and often ceases to occur after child birth. Unfortunately, for some women menstrual cramps are very severe, and can render them incapable of going about their normal day to day activities.. Menstrual cramps that are severe and unbearable in nature are also known medically as “dysmenorrhea”.

Uterine fibroids or endometriosis may also cause a woman to experience menstrual cramps. Treating these underlying causes can also help alleviate the cramping sensation during menstruation. An infection in the female reproductive organs called PID or pelvic inflammatory disease; caused by a sexually transmitted bacterium, can also make a woman experience sever menstrual cramping. Some woman also experience menstrual cramping as their cervical opening is narrow, thus impeding the menstrual flow. Most women will experience throbbing or cramping pain in the lower abdomen, back and thighs, while others may also experience nausea, dizziness, vomiting and loose stools. You will need to contact your family doctor if the pain is unbearable, as your family doctor will be able to trace the underlying cause for your condition after conducting a few medical tests. However, if the pain is not unbearable enough to restrict normal daily functions like sitting, standing and walking there are a few home remedies that will help you overcome this painful situation.

Home Remedies for Menstrual Cramps

• Extract the juice of fresh gooseberries and drink this on a daily basis. This will help to reduce the severity of cramping that takes place during menstruation. You can also eat the fruit if you find it time consuming to make the juice.

• Consuming unflavored yogurt after your mid day meal will also help you considerably.

• A pinch of cinnamon powder mixed in a glass of milk and drunk daily has also proved beneficial when treating menstrual cramps.

• A simple fruit salad made out of bananas, Indian gooseberry, honey or sugar can also help you overcome menstrual cramps effectively. Slice the bananas into small round pieces. Add a few pieces of Indian gooseberry to it; you can also use Indian gooseberry powder instead. Complete the salad by adding one tablespoon of honey or sugar to it and eat this salad a few days before the start of your monthly periods.

• Applying warm compresses on your lower abdomen, back and thighs will help alleviate the pain and cramping sensation.
