Prevention of arthritis is possible by exercise and right diet. To avoid the pain settling in the joints, it is important to follow a healthy lifestyle by exercising and eating right. Starting activities like aerobics, walks or swimming are of tremendous help. Doing these exercise routines at least three to four times in week definitely helps keep arthritis at bay. The intensity of the exercises should vary according to the age groups such as people above 60 should avoid heavy exercises and should go for low intensity aerobics or short walks of 20 minutes or so. An inactive person who has never exercised should start slowly and build their exercise regimen gradually as starting a heavy exercise at one go can do more harm than help the joints as it can put an excessive stress on them.

A hot pepper cream such as Capsaicin cream which is made from an active ingredient in hot peppers can relieve arthritis pain. Overweight people are more prone to arthritic problems as the weight is always carried on the joints of the body such as hips, ankles, knee and feet. Losing even 1 kilogram of weight reduces a considerable load on the weight bearing joints of the body.

Using alternative oils in the diet such as fish oil, primrose oil or flaxseed oil which contains omega-3 fatty acids help to ease inflammation of the joints. Also having a diet rich in Minerals, Vitamins and Anti- Oxidants can definitely help to keep away arthritis. Free radicals are one of the main reasons behind having arthritis. They attack areas such as the cartilage which cause pain, swelling and inflammation. They can form in the body from things like smoking cigarettes, pesticides, herbicides, car exhausts, alcohol etc. To combating these free radicals it is important to have a rich source of anti-oxidants in your diet. Nowadays there are anti-oxidant supplements available as well.    

Walking is the best exercise which gets your joints moving. Use different terrain for your walk every alternate day, as, if you follow the same path everyday, then same amount of stress falls on your feet in turn harming the ankles. It can prove to be painful, so using different pathways like hilly areas or fields for walking can definitely help. If, after a physical activity, there is a swelling in the joints, then put some ice on a thin towel and wrap it around the swollen joint. It can ease off the swelling and reduce the discomfort thus helping in prevention of arthritis.

Yoga is another simple form of exercise which can help in prevention of arthritis. Some Yoga asanas or poses give strength to the quadriceps and emphasize on stretching. Under the guidance of an instructor Yoga can even help people with arthritis. Yoga is known to give an overall sense of well-being and also reduces fatigue.
