The symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle are generally termed as premenstrual syndrome.  The symptoms are associated with the monthly period that mostly start showing up a week or two week before the period.  The hormonal changes which take place in the body during the menstruation cycle are considered to be mainly responsible for the premenstrual syndrome; though the actual causes are still unknown.

The premenstrual syndrome includes both the physical as well as the emotional changes which occur in a woman of reproductive age during the period.  These changes may result into intense physical or emotional disorders which may be milder in some cases while in other cases it may be unbearable. The symptoms cease to exist once the woman has reached the age of menopause which is generally 51.

Irritation, tiredness, stomach upset, breast swelling, insomnia, headache, backache, depression, severe body pains are some of the symptoms which is common in premenstrual syndrome(PMS) .

Woman between the age group of 20 to 40 years, having at least one child or suffering from depression or having a family history of depression are more vulnerable to it.  Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is the more severe form of the disease.  A chemical called serotonin released from brain is reportedly the cause of this condition. Suicidal thoughts, panic attacks and mod swings are some of the major symptoms associated with the disease PMDD.

The symptoms of PMS vary from woman to woman and no direct medication is available for the disease.  Having a healthy life style may ensure a better result.  Always take healthy foods such as fruits, milk, vegetables.  Exercise regularly, take proper rest and keep yourself away from alcohol and cigarettes. If the problem is too severe too handle better consult a doctor who may give you proper medication according to the need of your body.
