Home Remedies for Pinworms
Pin worms are small worms which have a head like the top of a pin and hence derive their name. These worms are commonly found in young children due to their lack of hygiene and playing habits. Pin worms appear white in color and are very small. Though children are more prone to having them, adults can often suffer from them too.
The pinworm usually resides in the upper part of the colon, surviving on the leftover and undigested food material. Pinworms are ingested in the form of eggs. These eggs that are usually present in soil and feces are usually accidentally ingested when the child is playing in the dirt. A lot of eggs may be accidentally picked up through the nails and then ingested if the child doesn’t wash hands before eating a meal.
These eggs are present in the intestines and when they hatch, the worms mate and lay more eggs which are passed out of the body through the feces. The female pinworm travels to the anal region to lay its eggs and therefore often causes itching in the anal region. Sometimes, the pinworms are also visible through the anus of the child.
Pinworms Natural Remedy
Other symptoms of pinworms include loss of appetite, irritability, weight loss, insomnia, vomiting and sometimes bed wetting. This parasite doesn’t cause a lot of damage but may rob your child of important nutrition and therefore should be cured as soon as possible. Here are some home remedies you can use to get rid of the pinworms.
• Keep your child clean. If your child already has pinworms, keep the anal area of the child clean. Make sure that your child’s hands are washed after playing outside and before eating. Washing hands is also important after your child has visited the toilet or touched the anal region so that the eggs are not ingested again.
• Your child may be too young to trim their own nails therefore you should do it for them. Keep the nails short by trimming them often.
• Garlic cloves, when crushed and eaten with warm water, can help kill the pinworms. You may also use garlic topically by grinding it into a paste, mixing it with some Vaseline and applying it on the anal region. This can kill the eggs and prevent more pinworms from hatching.
• Your doctor should be consulted as soon as possible so that medicine can be given. If the pinworms keep multiplying inside the body, they often appear around the anal region, nose and the child may even cough worms. It is better to remedy the problem before it reaches this stage.
