Obsessive Compulsive Behavior
Obsessive compulsive behavior is the result of being afflicted with a mental disorder known as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). People suffering from this disorder tend to repeat any form of behavior until it slowly becomes an intrusion in their normal existence and starts affecting their normal lives. This is an anxiety based disorder in which the patient has certain fears or tensions that can be called obsessions. These result in repetitive behavior that can be called compulsive. A lot of times, the patient themselves can see what is happening. It would be fair to say that they do try and control their obsessive and repetitive behaviors. But it is also true that they seldom succeed. A lot of times, OCD is manifested in people trying to prevent themselves from getting infected with things such as germs and bacteria. This is in fact one of the commonest forms of OCD. One of the commonest symptoms of people who are so scared of these things is that they are constantly washing their hands to get rid of germs that simply do not exist. They also sometimes wash their hands till they become raw! If they cannot for some reason get as clean as they feel it is important to get, they can also become unreasonably upset and disturbed.
Treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Other things that can be seen in people suffering from OCD is the compulsion to line things up in a particular way. They simply have to be lined up or symmetrical or kept in an order that simply cannot be disturbed. This is fairly common in small degrees. But a person can be said to be suffering from OCD when it happens to the extent that this symmetry or order begins to rule their lives. The common behaviors include fears that would normally involve everyday actions. These would be things such as checking repeatedly everyday small things such as locking a door, switching off lights or the stove or any electronic appliance. Not that there is anything unusual about this, but a person with OCD can take it all to brand new heights. They can check for these small things about 10 times in 10 minutes and successfully irritate people around them while doing it as well! They may also indulge in behaviors that would seem crazy to other people – such as getting offensive and abusive and pulling their own hair out in a fit of rage or frustration.
