Nutritional Deficiency and Hair Loss
A nutritional deficiency accounts for a large number of hair loss problems.
Vitamins that are present in our diet are essential for hair growth. Thus a lack of the same in large proportions, could lead to partial and very often, total hair loss. Our body requires nutrients in order to nourish the hair follicles; if the body lacks the required nutrients, then the follicle in turn will not be in a position to perform the function of hair growth in a normal fashion. This will eventually lead to loss of hair, split ends, breakage and damaged growth. The principal nutrients which are responsible for abnormal hair loss are Vitamin A, B, C and E.
Vitamin A helps in the secretion of sebum into the scalp, which aids in keeping the hair moist. If a sufficient amount of vitamin A is not included in the diet, the secretion of sebum is hampered thus resulting in a dry scalp. Dryness is one of the main causes of hair fall. Apart from this, a deficiency of this vitamin could result in a collection of cellular debris within the follicles, causing dandruff and hair loss. Vitamin E on the other hand enhances the circulation of blood towards the scalp and thus has a very important role to play. Apart from this it also helps in regenerating new hair by providing the follicles with an adequate supply of oxygen. If there is a lack of Vitamin E there may not be enough oxygen supply to the follicle (through blood), resulting in hair loss as well as reduced hair growth.
A prolonged deficiency of vitamin C can have side effects as it helps in forming collagen. Collagen is simply a type of connective tissue which holds other body tissues, in order to provide structure, like the tissue present in hair. Thus a lack of it can make the hair brittle and weak. Finally the vitamins B6 and B12 are concerned with the production of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries the oxygen from our lungs to various other parts of the body. If the follicles are not receiving their constant supply of oxygen and blood, they will be unable to stimulate hair growth. Hence one must ensure to maintain a healthy diet that is high in vitamins. The best source of these essential vitamins are fresh fruits and vegetables. Milk and egg yolk are beneficial as well. To conclude drink a lot of water as it helps in blood circulation.
