Natural Remedy for Bone Spur

Bone spurs are formed by extended bone growths on normal bones. They are spurs as an allusion to a spur that sticks out from the heel of a cowboy’s boot. Bone spurs are not sharp and are formed by the body’s attempt at rebuilding itself through bone growth. They form because of stress, rubbing or pressure applied to a certain section of the skeletal system. With the advancing of age, the cartilage in the joints begins to wear and finally breaks down. The friction between the joints causes the growth of spurs, which can be very painful if they press against a tendon or if pressure is applied to them.

Bone spurs normally form in the spine, feet, hands, hips, knees and shoulders. Spurs on the feet can occur due to a variety of reasons. Wearing tight fitting shoes can cause unnecessary pressure on certain parts of the feet and will eventually cause spurs. Women who wear high heels frequently are susceptible to the formation of spurs on the heels because of the pressure put on the heel itself. The shoulders, because of their complex structure are able to move in many ways. With the wear and tear of cartilage between the blades, the friction between the bones increases and causes the growth of spurs.

There are a number of recommendations made to prevent bone spurs growth. In the case of spurs in the feet, the most important thing to keep in mind is that the feet need plenty of rest and people suffering from bone spurs are advised to stay off their feet as long as is possible. Overweight people are advised to lose weight and take the pressure of the various joints of the body. If your shoes are tight or uncomfortable, buy a new pair of shoes that give your feet enough room for the circulation of blood and air. Include padding on the insoles of shoes that are uncomfortable. An ice pack, applied four or five times a day, to the affected area will lower the swelling and bring relief. Alternating between hot and cold water baths is also recommended for treating bone spurs. Getting a good foot massage will ease the tension in the tendons and ligaments thereby taking pressure off the feet. In case the pain tends to increase, it is advisable to visit a chiropodist to seek medical advice. Some forms of spurs can only be removed through surgery, for which medical attention must be sought out.
