Natural Treatments for Gingivitis
Swollen gums, or gingivitis as it is medically known, are the inflammation of the gums around an individuals tooth or teeth. While appearing to be nothing more than a swelling and tenderness in the region, even a mild form of gingivitis can go on to become one of the worst experiences you have had. To elaborate, the mouth produces bacteria throughout the day. While having these germs in the mouth is perfectly natural as the saliva keeps them well in check, with an unclean mouth and the right kind of stimulators, like white sugar, the bacteria can start to get a foothold between the teeth and gums. Initially, the sufferer will experience very mild forms of sensitivity, bleeding or swelling and these symptoms may even go unnoticed. However, all the while, the bacteria are starting to form plaque on or between the teeth that brushing would not remove. When the plaque starts to become calcified plaque, the infection goes into the gum line where the bacteria gathers and reproduces at extremely high rates. People with a weak immune system are more susceptible to gingivitis as their bodies are ill equipped to fight off the danger. Illnesses like AIDS, Addison’s disease, leukemia and Wegner disease are examples of illnesses that affect the immune system. Some symptoms that you notice during the onset of gingivitis are a foul odor being emitted from the mouth, a change in color and structure of the gums, an inflammation and tenderness at the site of infection.
Good oral hygiene is essential in fighting off gingivitis. Gargling twice a day with home made saline solution using a pinch of salt in a glass of lukewarm water will help reduce the swelling in the mouth. Anti – bacterial mouthwash will also help fight the bacterial infection in the gums and teeth. Rubbing the gums with clove oil may prompt a burning sensation at first, but is very effective in curing gingivitis. Create a mixture of baking soda and water and dab the solution on the affected area with your finger. After that, brush using herbal powder as this helps neutralize the acidity of bacteria. Studies have shown that cranberry juice is very effective in treatment of gingivitis; however, one must make sure that it does not have sugar content. Toothpastes containing margosa extract, mint, or even holy basil are highly recommended when it comes to fighting gingivitis as they prevent the spread of infection as well as reduce any inflammation or swelling.
