Treating Diabetes:
Diabetes or diabetes mellitus refers to a metabolic disorder wherein the pancreas cannot produce adequate amounts of insulin (type 1 diabetes) or the body is unable to respond properly to the insulin produced (type 2 diabetes). Medical tests reveal the existence of diabetes in the form of constantly high blood sugar levels. The first type of diabetes normally occurs during the initial years and develops with increasing age and the second type is commonly seen in adults above the age of 40. Stress, obesity, lack of exercise, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and unhealthy eating habits are causes of diabetes. Gestation diabetes is a third type of diabetes which refers to high blood sugar levels which develop during pregnancy and ceases to exist after delivery and can be detrimental to both the mother and the fetus.
Insulin facilitates the absorption of glucose by the cells in order to produce energy. In the case of a person suffering from diabetes, the glucose remains in the bloodstream making a diabetic person more prone to cardiovascular disorders, nerve related issues, renal disorders and kidney problems. It causes weakness, fatigue, an urge to urinate frequently and an increase in appetite and thirst. In the first type, it can lead to excessive weight loss and in the second type, it can cause obesity. Diabetes is the main reason for blindness in adults. Diabetes reduces the body’s capacity to heal, hence it increases chances of infections, gangrene and amputations. People suffering from diabetes should take great precautions to prevent injury. They should not walk barefoot as the nerves tend to go numb and they slowly start losing sensation in their limbs, making them oblivious to injury and pain. Regular visits to the doctor and clinical tests are recommended to assess the sugar levels.
Diabetes is not curable but can be kept in check through regular exercise, a proper diet and medication. A 30 minute brisk walk everyday can do wonders in controlling blood sugar levels. Curry leaves, onions, bitter gourd, fenugreek and garlic help in bringing down sugar levels. Cinnamon, consumed in moderate quantities, also reduces blood sugar levels. The use of honey – a natural sweetener, instead of sugar, has proved to benefit people suffering from diabetes as it does not increase sugar levels. Grapefruit and Indian gooseberry are rich in vitamin C. They boost the immune system and are useful in treating people suffering from diabetes. Alcohol, junk food, white bread and confectioneries should be avoided.
