Atopic Dermatitis Eczema

A group of disorders affecting the human skin are collectively termed eczema. Atopic dermatitis is the most commonly witnessed type of eczema. It is most often seen in infants and little children. In atopic dermatitis, the body has no moisture retention capacity and hence becomes dry and scaly. It is also accompanied by itching and an inflammation of the skin. Skin affected by atopic dermatitis can be quite unsightly and should be administered immediate care. The word atopic refers to a disorder that is hereditary. The exact cause for atopic dermatitis is still unknown, although its hereditary tendency has been proved. It initially starts off with an incessant itching sensation on the skin. Scratching worsens the itching and very soon, the skin becomes dry and scaly. A naturally dry skin only worsens matters. Though it is mostly an inherited disorder, in some cases, your body might react to certain harsh chemicals present in detergents or solvents resulting in the form of eczema atopic dermatitis. In yet other cases, a deficiency of vitamin B6 or even a blood circulation problem might cause atopic dermatitis. Hence, if you do notice dryness leading to the skin being scaly and also a red discoloration on certain parts of the skin, medical supervision is best in order to rule out the role of allergens. The treatment then is usually long term and will have phases where the intensity of the affliction varies.

There are a number of home remedies too that can be effectively used to cure atopic dermatitis, or at least reduce the inflammation in a big way. The consumption of flax seed oil is the most recommended of home remedies. Intake of the oil both directly and through capsules greatly helps the fight against atopic dermatitis. In the span of a week, you will notice a visible reduction in the itching and redness on the skin. A bath with baking soda dissolved in warm bath water is another excellent remedy. Dissolve a cup of baking soda in a shallow tub of warm water and soak in it for at least twenty minutes. Alternately, one could also use oatmeal instead of baking soda to achieve similar results. Application of cool wet compresses also provides immediate relief from the itching and inflammation. So does application of natural vitamin E on the affected skin. Another effective relief is humidifying your environment by standing in a hot shower with the door closed.
