Natural Remedies For Constipation
Constipation is a common problem, but it is usually a mild one. Chronic constipation however is serious, as it is a sign that something is wrong with your digestive system. It should therefore be addressed promptly, before it leads to serious problems. Chronic constipation can result in hemorrhoids and a number of other conditions, and, if severe enough, may turn into complete obstruction of the bowel.
In a large number of cases, constipation is merely the result of a poor diet and lifestyle, and addressing these causes is the best natural remedy. You must consume adequate amounts of water and fiber in order to pass a normal stool, and if either one is lacking, you will get constipated. Foods that are rich in fiber are all vegetables and fruits, as well as whole grain. Unfortunately, many western diets are deficient in these foods. Ensure that you eat a lot of these foods, and also consume at least 8 glasses of water a day. Water requirements are not universal, as they depend upon your metabolism, the weather, your level of activity, and also the foods you consume. Do not use flaxseed oil as a substitute – this will give you the omega 3 fatty acids, but it will not give you the fiber, which you need to fight constipation.
A number of foods seem to act as natural laxatives, although the effectiveness varies – these include honey, dates, bananas, tomato juice, plums, and figs. You can include these foods in your diet, and see if there is any improvement. Remember to consult your doctor if you continue to suffer from frequent constipation. Also remember that certain medications can cause constipation, so if you are on medication, you need to ask your doctor about the side effects.
