How does Menopause Affects Sexual Health
Menopause refers to the stage in a woman’s life when her reproductive ability ceases. It is the time when the last menstrual cycle occurs. Hormonal changes occur for some time leading up to the actual time of menopause. It usually takes place when a woman reaches 51 years of age. However, it cannot be confirmed until twelve months have passed without the occurrence of a period. When menopause takes place, the number of eggs or ovules in the ovaries diminishes. Menopause also results in a decreased production of estrogen in the body. This occurs because as the woman ages, the number of ovules in the ovaries that are able to reach maturation reduces.
Reduction in Estrogen
The reduction in estrogen may affect the sex drive and sexual functioning. Many women experience decreased sensitivity to stroking and touching, and may find that arousal doesn’t take place that easily. This can diminish a woman’s interest in sex. Decreased estrogen content also leads to a reduction in the supply of blood to the vagina. This disruption in blood supply can affect the lubrication in the vagina, resulting in dryness which causes discomfort during sexual intercourse. Menopause may have other effects which may also affect the sexual health of the woman. These include disturbances in sleeping pattern, problems of bladder control, stress, anxiety and depression and other health issues. However, it has also been noted that some women claim to experience a higher sex drive. This could be attributed to the fact that women stop experiencing anxiety over the possibility of getting pregnant. Intimacy with one’s partner may also be higher during this age, as responsibilities associated with bringing up children are no longer present.
For reducing the vaginal dryness that occurs during menopause, lubricants may be made use of. For more natural remedies, petroleum jelly, baby oil or olive oil can also be used. These substances are commonly used as lubricants and many women are reported to prefer them to other water soluble lubricants. It is however important to maintain proper hygiene when these oils are used as they may pose a risk for vaginal infections. The reason for this is that they may cause the deterioration in condoms and diaphragms, in addition to creating an environment that may easily trap germs and microorganisms. Prolonged foreplay too is advisable in order to avoid this problem. It may also help to talk to a doctor or seek counseling regarding the matter. The doctor may suggest a discussion with a professional who specializes in sexual dysfunction.
