Measles Symptoms and Remedies

Measles is a viral infection of the respiratory tract commonly seen in children. Historically, measles was also known as rubeola. Common symptoms include cough, sore throat, fever, runny nose, and skin rashes. Measles symptoms generally appear 10-12 days after coming in contact with the virus. The initial symptoms are usually very similar to the common cold – mild fever, sore throat, persistent cough, inflamed eyes and a runny nose. After two to three days, Kopik’s spots, which are tiny white spots with bluish-white centers, start appearing inside the mouth. Kopik’s spots are a characteristic sign of measles but are often not visible due to their transient nature. Another characteristic of measles is the occurrence of an itchy rash on the face, back, and chest. The Measles virus is highly contagious and spreads through human contact with infected person. However, if you have had measles previously, your body will be immune to it. People vaccinated against measles will also be safe from infection.

Measles is a serious disease and can prove fatal. In some cases, measles can lead to encephalitis and pneumonia and further complicate things. There are no established treatments available for measles. Once the infection is acquired, the treatment is mostly supportive therapies to better manage the symptoms rather than actual cure. Infants who are exposed to this virus should get vaccination within 72 hours. People with a weakened immune system should be injected with immune serum globulin to help fight off the infection. Prevention is the best way to keep away from measles. Therefore, it is extremely important to vaccinate children so that they do not suffer from this disease.

The patients should have regular follow-up with the doctor. At home, you can take the following steps to better manage the condition.

Complete Bed Rest: The body needs proper rest to heal and therefore you should avoid all activities. This will also aid the already weakened immune system.

Keep Drinking Fluids: Patients suffering from measles need plenty of liquid to stay hydrated. The fever usually dehydrates the body quickly and much of the water gets lost from the body in the form of sweat. Therefore, keep drinking water, fruit juices, and herbal tea as frequently as possible.

Use Humidifiers for Respiratory Relief: The cough and sore throat will feel much better when you use humidifiers in the room.

Avoid Bright Lights: Bright lights may be very bothersome to a measles patient (this includes television and computer screens). Use low power lights and wear sunglasses to protect and soothe the eyes.
