To know about infertility treatment we should first know what infertility is. Inability to conceive after a year of unprotected intercourse is called infertility. 15% of the population is affected by it which means one of every six or seven couples are suffering from this problem.

The primary causes of infertility are,

  • Ovulatory problem
  • Male factor such as abnormal semen analysis, low sperm count or motility.
  • Blocked or scarred fallopian tubes.
  • Unexplained infertility.

Infertility treatment includes following therapies;

  • Medical therapy
  • Reproductive surgery
  • Intrauterine insemination
  • Assisted reproductive technology

Medical therapy is generally associated with treatment of ovulation dysfunction. This can be caused by other ways like thyroid disease, however if this is not the cause oral medication like Glucophage, Clomid, or Femara is suggested to the patient. The basic function of the medicine is to induce ovulotery function which is a success in more than 80% cases. There are slight side effects in this case and a slight increase in the probability of conceiving twins.

Reproductive surgery are performed now a days endoscopcially. Laparoscope a type of endoscope is inserted through the navel, and surgeon can remove scar tissues, treat endometriosis, remove cysts on the ovaries, and unblock the fallopian tubes. This process is more preferred because it includes reduced costs, quicker recovery, less complication, less pain, better cosmetic results, and high success rate. Laparotomy (open surgery) may still be required in some cases like reversing tubal  ligations, and removing large fibroid tumors.

Intrauterine insemination refers to a procedure where semen undergoes a washing process and then the sperm are then placed into the uterus. It is done to the couples with mild abnormal semen analyses. It is also performed to the couples where the male partner has no or very low number of sperms.  Assisted reproductive technology is another process which is used for infertility treatment.
