Infant Gas Remedies

Infant gas or colic can worry new parents. When you take your baby to the doctor, the physician might just ask you to wait till the child is about three months old. By this time, most children get over their colic problem. But when babies cry incessantly because of colic, most parents would like to find ways to help the child. You might want to try out a few simple home remedies to soothe the child and treat infant gas. However, do remember that the remedies may not have the same affect on all children – while some babies may become better, others may not react to the treatment.

Home Remedies for Infant Gas:

Massage: A gentle massage is known to be good for colicky babies. There are various methods and techniques of massaging a child that might help relieve the gas. You can research and learn about techniques. You may also want to work with a qualified therapist to learn the methods of massaging first-hand. The methods of massage are generally simple and you will be able to comfort your child through massage. Apart from treating infant gas, a massage increases the baby’s blood circulation and relaxes the muscles. Again, some kids respond to massage better than others. But do give it a try.

Herbal Tea: This is an effective remedy and it can work wonders for colicky babies. Do speak to your doctor before giving herbal tea to your child. If your doctor approves it, you might want to try brewing herbal tea with herbs like catnip, ginger, chamomile, and peppermint. These teas can bring relief from colic. But remember that herbal teas are not substitutes for regular meals. It is just a way to help a baby with infant gas and it is essential to consult your doctor before giving it to your baby.

Burping: Burping is known to be beneficial for babies with colic. Generally, parents burp their child after feeding him. But a baby, who is prone to infant gas, might feel worse as more air will get into the child’s digestive system. And that will cause discomfort. So instead, burp your baby before, during and after feeding him. This will reduce the gas and ease discomfort.

Warm Bath: Warmth is a good remedy for treating infant gas. A warm bottle, a warm bath or any other warming device will warm the baby’s stomach, relax him and ease the intestines, letting the child pass gas easily. Try a warm bath – your baby will love it and it will also ease the problem of excess gas.
