Indigestion Natural Remedies
Indigestion, medically known as dyspepsia, is a common problem involving abdominal pain and bloating. Often, other symptoms are also present, such as nausea, gas, and heartburn. Although indigestion is approached by most people as a problem in itself, it is usually a sign of some larger underlying problem. An occasional bout of indigestion may simply be due to overeating or consuming undercooked or slightly spoilt food. This type of indigestion can usually just be waited out. Your digestive system will get rid of whatever is bothering it, and all you need to do is refrain from putting any additional stress on it. Eat light food that does not have too much of oil or spices, and ensure that your meals are small. In addition, you can sip lemonade at intervals, as this will greatly reduce nausea. Many people find that fresh lime soda or ginger ale is still more effective against nausea, and calms the roiling in your stomach almost immediately. Consuming yogurt is also beneficial, and even if you don’t feel well enough to have a proper meal, you should eat a small amount of yogurt.
On the other hand, if you have frequent bouts of indigestion, you need to find out what is causing it. The measures mentioned here will probably help ease your symptoms whenever they occur, but they will not prevent the problem from recurring. You need to consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis, and then start treating the underlying problem. In the meanwhile, you can use these home remedies for temporary relief.
There are a variety of herbal teas available that are very helpful in treating indigestion, and you should try these too. Mint tea and chamomile are particularly effective, but you can try many others too.
One quick acting home remedy for indigestion is baking soda. Take a glass of water, add two teaspoons of baking soda to it, stir it up thoroughly, and then drink the solution. Another simple home remedy is to put a teaspoon or two of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, stir it, and take of few sips of this solution at intervals during every meal. Note that these two remedies work in different ways, and either one of them may not suit you, depending upon what is causing the indigestion. Baking soda is alkaline, and if you have a problem with acidity, it will work very while, while vinegar is itself acidic, and may exacerbate such a problem.
