Before you treat a boil, you need to make sure that you have this condition. If you start treatment for something that is not a boil, you can only worsen the problem. After you have made sure that you do in fact have a boil, the best treatment is to apply warm compress to soak the boil in warm water. This does several things. First of all, it will help decrease the pain that is often associated with boils. The next thing that using a warm compress will do is to bring the pus to the surface of the boil. After you have used a warm compress several times, the boil will come to a head. That simply means the pus has finally reached the surface of your skin and is ready to burst open. While it may sound a little disgusting, this is the only way a boil can heal. With repeated soakings, a boil can be expected to burst open within seven days of appearing.
After the boil begins to drain, you will want to treat it with care. You do not want bacteria to enter into the site after the skin is opened. Make sure before touching the area, you have washed and sanitized your hands. Next, you will want to use a good antibacterial soap on the area until all of the pus is gone. In addition, antibacterial ointment such as Neosporin is the best way to not only ensure that infection does not enter the area, but it will also decrease the amount of scarring. Cover the area with a bandage and tell the wound heals completely.
