There is no way to completely avoid getting the common cold.  Anytime you step out of your house, your immune system is tested– and it doesn’t matter what time of the year it is either.  The common cold can strike at any time.  However, by using a little common sense, you can certainly cut the chances of developing problems with the common cold. Here are some tips to help you.

Avoid crowded places:
One of the best things that you can do to reduce your chance of developing a cold is to avoid crowded places.  This is especially true during the winter months when cold are on the rise.  If you see that an elevator is jam-packed with people, opt for a less crowded elevator or take the stairs. Crowded malls and other public places are breeding grounds for cold germs, too.  While you can’t live in solitary confinement during the winter months, avoiding high traffic areas may help you cut your chances of getting a cold.

Wash you hand, or use hand gel:
If you have heard it once, you have heard it a million times.  Washing your hands with antibacterial soap and warm water can help prevent the cold better than any other method. You know you always won’t be near a sink, so carry a container of antibacterial hand gel with you and make sure you use it frequently.  Any time you touch something, use a little hand gel. Antibacterial gel can kill almost 99% of germs that you pick up on your hands, so why wouldn’t you use it?

Clean your house:
If someone in your home such as your spouse or your children have the cold, then use common sense and keep the house clean. Wash all bedding, towels and clothing immediately, and use household disinfectant such as Lysol on every surface in your home.
