There is no way you can completely avoid ringworm. This is because ringworm is caused by a common bacteria or fungus that lives on the skin. If you come in contact with someone that has the infection and you brush up against them or shake hands with them, then you have been exposed. You can also get the infection from your family pet if they have lesions on their skin. However, just because you have been exposed, does not mean you will come down with a case of ringworm. It seems some people are more prone to developing lesions than others.
If someone in your household has ringworm, then there are few simply precautions you can take to lessen the chances of getting it yourself. First of all, if you are treating your children or someone else, make sure you apply their medication with cotton balls or swabs and you may want to consider wearing gloves so that you do not come in direct contact with the lesions. Next, you will want to make sure you wash all infection clothing and bedding alone and frequently. Never share clothes or other items with those that have been infected. If you frequent the gym, make sure you wipe down equipment and wear shoes in the locker room. Antibacterial hand gel is also very effective. The same goes for pets that may be infected. If your pet has ringworm, then avoid sleeping with the pet and make sure the pet’s other bedding is washed frequently to prevent spreading.
Lysol and other household sprays can help get rid of the infection if it is on objects in your home. Spray commonly touched items such as phones, light switches, toilet seats, handles and toys. You can also treat items with a spray of bleach diluted with water. Tea tree oil can also be used for cleaner and will kill infections.
