Natural Treatments for Snoring
Snoring can be one of the most annoying habits a person develops. The irritation may not necessarily be limited to others surrounding the snoring individual during sleep, but also to the sufferer as well. Rarely are the full extents and problems caused by snoring properly analyzed. Snoring can greatly affect not only the quantity of an individual’s sleep but also the quality of it, causing the person to feel drowsy or lethargic throughout the course of the day. Most commonly, people who snore have too much throat and nasal tissue. This “floppy” tissue is more prone to vibrate and create the snoring noise, as well as gets in the way of smooth breathing. It is important to know the exact cause of a persons snoring habit as they will vary from one individual to another. Snoring can be caused by some uncontrollable factors, as well as some factors that we may be able to tweak. The ones that we cannot control include hereditary reasons where a narrow throat, enlarged adenoids or even a cleft palate can lead to the condition; aging - where the throat becomes narrower as you become older; allergies, asthma and colds.
Snoring can even be brought on by your sex. Men have smaller air passages than women, causing them to be more likely to snore. However, factors like the sleeping posture; intake of medications or alcohol; smoking as well as being out of shape or overweight can also contribute to the condition, but these factors are within our control. Certain observations may give us clues as to the root cause of the condition. For example, if you snore with your mouth closed, the tongue is highly likely to be the culprit; if you snore with your mouth open, the condition stems from the tissue in the throat.
Most home remedies tend to be suggestions for better sleeping habits and posture, as they are more often that not, the root cause of this issue. Avoid sleeping on your sides as much as possible. To help, you can wear a pair of trousers with long pockets before you go to sleep. Place a tennis ball in each pocket as these will cause discomfort if you tend to roll onto your side. Studies have shown that regular exercise and aerobics lower the likelihood of snoring, but one should not perform them just before going to sleep as this may charge the body and trying to sleep may turn into a task. One should also avoid alcohol and smoking as much as possible.
