Natural Remedy for Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease characterized by the formation of sores in various parts of the body. It is caused by two different strains of the herpes simplex virus, Type 1 (HSV-1) and Type 2 (HSV-2). In the case of Type 1, the disease is usually manifested as cold sores on the mouth, face, and lips, though some individuals may develop sores on the genitals as well. The Type 2 virus is more commonly associated with genital sores. In men, the sores appear on the shaft of the penis and surrounding areas, while in women they appear on and near the vulva. In both sexes, common symptoms include some pain with itching and burning sensations. In a few cases, symptoms may include a discharge from the penis or vagina, fever, muscle pain, and headache. Women can also suffer from pain during urination and cervictis, which is an inflammation of the cervix. The genital sores typical of this disease appear about a week after exposure to the virus. It usually takes 2-3 weeks for the sores to turn into ulcers, crust and heal.

So far, there are no medications to destroy the herpes virus. However, antiviral medications can help to reduce the severity of an outbreak and reduce the duration of the disease. Doctors also recommend keeping the sores clean and dry and to avoid touching them. Petroleum jelly may be applied to the sores to prevent moisture from reaching them. Natural substances such as tea tree oil and aloe vera are also believed to help protect and speed up the healing genital herpes sore. In addition, their natural ingredients help to heal the scars left behind after the sores crust and fall away. Patients have also reported that simple cold packs (such as ice in a plastic bag) can provide relief from the itching and burning sensation on the sores.

Other common ingredients from any kitchen include baking soda and cornstarch. Either of these two can be dusted onto genital herpes sores to help dry them and reduce itching. Care must be taken to ensure that you dust from a distance and not spread the contamination. Some patients use cold tea bags since it is believed the tannic acid present in tea acts as a soothing agent. Even cotton balls dipped in cold milk provide relief from genital herpes. During the entire duration of the disease, it is important to avoid all sexual contact. Once the treatment is complete, it is recommended to practice safe sexual behavior.
