Home Remedies for Cold Sores
Cold sores also commonly referred to as fever blisters, is a condition that is caused by herpes simplex virus. These sores are very often wrongly confused with canker sores, which is a mouth ulcer. Unlike canker sores, cold sores are extremely contagious and they usually appear on the area of skin that is adjacent to mouth. At times these sores could also appear on the fingers, nostrils, chin and genitals. Usually the symptoms and signs of this condition are seen 20 days after one has been exposed to the virus. This condition manifests itself through the formation of small brown or red blisters, which are filled with fluid, on the skin. These blisters are often very painful and they may even ooze and burst. When an individual has been infected with this particular virus, he/ she may experience fever, irritability, head aches, a difficulty while swallowing and there could be a swelling and itching of the lips.
The herpes virus is basically of 2 types; HSV 1 and HSV 2. Cold sores, in most cases are caused by the HSV 1 virus while HSV 2 causes genital herpes. However, both can give rise to an infection on any part of the body. These viruses are very contagious and cold sores can be contracted through actions such as kissing or hugging an infected person. Here are some home remedies that can help treat this condition. Garlic is very effective in treating cold sores. Slice a garlic pod in half and place one half on the sore. The antifungal fungal properties of garlic will accelerate the healing process. Used tea bags, after being placed in the refrigerator to cool, can also be placed on the sores. You can also apply an ice pack on the sores to gain relief.
Applying a small amount of witch hazel on the affected area will also provide you with some relief from cold sores. Gently rub a few drops of aloe vera oil or gel on the sores. Applying lemon balm extract on the sores is also known to speed up healing and reduce symptoms. Stay away from any type of acidic foods. Oatmeal, seeds, peas, grains, peanuts, chocolates, tea, coffee, aerated drink and sodas should all be avoided. Your diet should include the vitamins A, C and E. thus consume more vegetables and fruits as they will provide you with the vitamins and nutrients required to boost your immunity, which in turn will help in fighting the virus.
