Natural Treatment for Colic:
Colic is a very common problem among infants; in fact about 10 to 30% of infants have this problem. When a baby has colic it keeps crying ceaselessly for hours. These endless crying sessions can drag on for over 3 hours a day for up to an entire week. This behavior is harmless, but it usually tends to take its toll on the infant’s parents. Infant boys and girls are both affected equally by this condition. The condition generally begins in the third and sixth week post delivery and could continue till the child is 3 months old. If the condition persists for over three month then it can be a health related problem. What causes this condition in infants is, as of now, unknown. However some of the possibilities have been listed as; stomach aches, sensitivity to certain foods, change in place, over eating, rapid eating, swallowing too much of air, inability to burp and so on. Common symptoms of colic are crying, moody and fussy behavior, uncomfortable pain, loss of energy, unwillingness to eat and at times vomiting.
Here are some home remedies that can help cure colic condition. Basil contains sedative and antispasmodic properties, which will work very well in treating colic. Take 1-1 ½ teaspoons of dried basil leaves in a cup and pour boiling water over them. Now cover the cup and keep it aside for a few minutes. Strain the water, once it has cooled to room temperature, into a bottle. This can be given to the baby a few spoons at a time. Similarly mint also contains antispasmodic properties and hence can prove to be useful for treating colic. Put about a teaspoon full of dried mint leaves in a bowl and then pour boiling water into the bowl. This should be left aside for 10 minutes and once cooled strained into a bottle. This decoction can be given to the baby to reduce the symptoms of colic.
Chamomile tea also works well on colic. Fill a bowl with a teaspoon of chamomile flowers, after which you should pour boiling water over them. After the water has cooled, the tea has to be strained into a bottle and then be fed to the baby. Chamomile will also work, as this too contains sedative and antispasmodic properties. Please bear in mind that is very important for all parents to consult the child’s pediatrician, if they notice colic like symptoms. This is primarily to rule out the possibility of any other problem.
