Natural Cures for Cholera
Cholera is caused by a bacterium that causes diarrhea which the intestines. The bacteria ‘Vibrio cholerae’ gets into the body through contaminated food, or water. Cholera is acute and contagious and in the past, has been the cause of many fatal epidemics. Cholera is usually very mild and does not exhibit any symptoms except for diarrhea. However, it can also become severe if proper care is not taken. The main symptoms of cholera are watery diarrhea, cramps in legs, feeling of nausea, and vomiting. The rapid loss of fluids from the body, due to vomiting and diarrhea, can lead to severe dehydration and even shock. If proper cholera treatment and medication are not made available immediately, it can prove fatal due to shock.
Though cholera is spread by contaminated water and food, it has many a times culminated into an epidemic. In the case of an epidemic, it is the feces of an infected person that become the source of infection. If the general hygiene in an area is low and the sewage system and water treatment is not proper, the disease can spread rather quickly and take on an epidemic scale. However, the disease does not spread through casual contact. If you are taking care of someone who has cholera, you can maintain contact with the person without any fear of contracting the disease yourself. It has been observed that people who live in coastal areas where hygiene is low are susceptible to cholera. The bacteria ‘Vibrio cholerae’ thrives in coastal waters. The consumption of raw fish, especially shellfish, can also transfer the bacteria and cause cholera.
Since the deaths occurring from the disease are due to severe dehydration, normal hydration level should be maintained in the body. The treatment of the disease is based on oral re-hydration. Oral re-hydration salts are used to make solutions with water. These solutions should be consumed at regular intervals. There are several other oral re-hydration therapies that have been made with household ingredients. Whey water, diluted milk, lime water are some common drinks to maintain water in the body.
Along with the above mentioned liquids, broths, juices, weak soups or prepackaged ORS solutions should be taken for cholera cure. You can also boil pulses in excess water, strain and then drink that water to restore energy and maintain hydration in the body. If your cholera is severe, you may need fluid replacements through intravenous injections. The doctor may even give you intravenous antibiotics. However, antibiotics will only get rid of the bacteria. For preventing dehydration, the only solution is to keep drinking enough water and fluids to keep the body hydrated.
