Natural Cure to Prevent Alzheimer
Alzheimer’s is a neurological disease, and is the most common form of dementia in elderly people. Also called Alzheimer’s disease or senile dementia of the Alzheimer Type (SDAT), this mental condition is commonly diagnosed in people above the age of 65 years. Alzheimer’s affects a person gradually, and the initial phase of the disease includes forgetfulness. The patient forgets recently learnt facts and also familiar people, events and daily routines. In the second stage, the patients show behavioral changes. They become confused, aggressive and irritable, suffer from panic attacks, talk incoherently, and suffer from mood swings. In the final stage, the patient withdraws from everyone, and loses control over bodily functions like urinary and bowel movements.
The exact cause of Alzheimer’s is not known yet, though age is considered one of the factors contributing to it. Heavy drinkers and smokers, heart patients, patients of high blood pressure, those who have suffered a head injury in the past, and patients of Down Syndrome are at a higher risk of suffering from Alzheimer’s. The disease can however be prevented if one leads a healthy lifestyle. It’s best (especially for patients in the initial stages) to avoid cigarettes, alcohol, too much intake of salt, and foods with high cholesterol content and refined carbohydrates.
There are many natural remedies that seem to help patients of Alzheimer’s. Ginkgo biloba promotes blood circulation, and makes new nerve cells in the parts of the brain that are affected by Alzheimer’s. It can be had in the form of supplements or green tea. Ginseng, fennel, rosemary, and dill also promote brain activity. Antioxidants also protect the nerve cells from being damaged by oxidants. Include Vitamin E and C in your diet, especially found in dark-colored fruits and vegetables. Turmeric also has antioxidant properties. Consume a glass of warm milk with half a teaspoon of turmeric everyday to prevent Alzheimer’s. Increasing folic acid levels by consuming green leafy vegetables, bananas, lentils, oranges, avocados, and asparagus and vitamins B6 and B12 improves mental functions. Nutrients like Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are also beneficial in the initial stages of Alzheimer’s. The sufferer should consume oily fish tuna, mackerel, and salmon for those fatty acids. Apart from these, it’s important to be physically and mentally active. Regular exercises like walking, jogging, swimming, and cycling are beneficial. One can also solve puzzles like crossword, jigsaw, word games, and read books to keep mentally active. Meditation, yoga and aromatherapy by using essential oils like lavender oil and lemon balm also reduce anxiety.
