Toenail Infection Cure

Fungal toenail infection, medically called onychomycosis, is caused by a group of fungus called dermatophytes. When the skin is exposed to warm moisture for a prolonged time, these fungi grow in the nail or on the outer edge. As these fungi grow, they feed on the keratin that forms the surface of the toe nail. The infection causes discoloration of the nail, making it yellow, brown, gray, or black. Other than discoloration, it also causes physical pain and makes the surrounding skin itchy and swollen. The big toe and the little toe are most vulnerable to the infection. And if not treated, the nail can crack and break away from its bed. The infection can also spread to other toes, the other foot and in some cases other body parts as well. Sports persons and people who wear tight shoes are at a higher risk of suffering from the infection. Also, damp places like swimming pool and public gyms are breeding grounds for these fungi. One can prevent the infection by keeping the nails clean and dry, changing socks often, wearing only clean and dry socks, and not letting the fungi enter through cut or torn skin around toenails. One can also use antifungal powder and sprays to prevent infection.

Treating an infected toenail can take a long time, especially if the nail is torn from its bed, as it takes a long time for a new nail to replace the old one. So, one requires to be patient when treating this infection. There are many home remedies that can help cure toenail infection. Tea tree oil is very effective in combating all kinds of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Dip a clean cotton swab in the oil and apply on your toes twice a day – once in the morning and once while going to bed. You can also mix tea tree oil with lavender oil and apply with a cotton swab about three times every day. Like tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar is also a good disinfectant. Mix water and apple cider vinegar in equal amounts and sit with your feet soaked in this for about 20 minutes. Dry the toes with a clean towel thoroughly. Turmeric is also beneficial in disinfecting and keeping toes healthy. Make a paste of turmeric powder and water and apply on the affected toes. After the paste has dried, rinse it with water and dry your feet thoroughly with a towel.
