Home Remedies for Razor Bumps

Pseudofolliculitis barbae is the other name for razor bumps, which are small bumps on the skin which appear after shaving. They are irritating and can set off pimples and scars on the skin. It is a common problem faced by both men and women. Razor bumps occur due to ingrown hair. A mild rash appears and may be present for few hours or for days based on the severity of the condition. It can become a raised bump or turn into an infected pustule. Razor bumps have are red in color, similar to a rash, and cause itching and prickling pain. They occur most often on the face for men, but also wherever the razor is used to remove body hair.

What causes razor bumps? Razor bumps can be caused by applying too much pressure while shaving, using blunt and dirty razors, or shaving badly. If the skin is not properly lubricated before shaving, it can also result in these bumps. When dull blades are used, the hair gets separated from the hair shaft causing it to curl into the skin follicles and when the sharpened hair tips grow they trigger pimples, pustules, cysts, and irritation.

Remedies for Razor Bumps

Home remedies for razor bumps. There are home remedies that will help deal with razor bumps. The best way to prevent razor bumps is to always use warm water while shaving. Take care to moisturize the skin well before shaving. Shave in the direction the hair grows. Start with easier areas around the cheeks, jaw line and neck. It is better if you exfoliate the skin with a loofah or sponge or use a scrub made with 1 tsp of baking soda and liquid soap.

Apply witch hazel as soon as you finish shaving as the antiseptic qualities in witch hazel prevent razor bumps. Soak two aspirins without coating in a little warm water. Once the aspirin softens, apply the liquid on the skin after shaving to prevent razor bumps and also kill any infection. You can take three drops of glycerin, a quarter cup of water, two uncoated aspirin tablets and mix them well till the aspirin dissolves. Use this as a skin toner after shaving. In case you are allergic to aspirin do not use it.

Apply apple cider vinegar on the bumps, as it is very effective in treating razor bumps. Aloe vera is excellent in curing razor bumps. Cut wide open a leaf of the aloe vera plant, squeeze the gel, and apply it on the skin to bring relief. The essential oils of lavender, chamomile or tea oil are very good for curing razor bumps. Use either one of them or blend all of them to soothe the skin. In case the condition gets worse consult a dermatologist.
