Home Remedies for Pain

Pain is one of the body’s most useful indicators to let us know when something is wrong. This can range from the extreme pain caused by wounds and fractures, to milder, nagging pains that bring our attention to less dramatic conditions. For example, discomfort in the gums while eating or a throbbing pain can indicate a case of gum infection. If the pain didn’t warn us, we would never know until it was too late to reverse the condition and treat the infection.

Many other medical conditions begin with some level of pain even before other symptoms show up. For example, teething babies become irritable and show signs of pain in the gums weeks before the first tooth appears. Another important example of pain as an indicator is the sharp, shooting pain felt along the left arm and body that warn of a possible cardiac arrest days before the actual attack. Unfortunately, many people tend to treat pain as a problem that should be immediately beaten down with medication! The clever thing to do is to listen to what your body is telling you, and then take appropriate action. In almost all cases, once the cause of the pain is identified and treated, the pain itself goes away.

Home Remedies for Toothache Pain

However, most of us prefer to have options to manage the pain once it has served its purpose as an indicator. For most pains related to skin conditions, such as insect bites, mild burns, and inflammations, a cold compress can provide instant relief. The cold numbs the affected area and reduces blood flow to the pain receptors, leading to reduction in pain. However, care must be taken to avoid causing skin damage due to excessive cold; most doctors recommend placing cold compresses for periods of less than ten minutes. Discomfort and pain in the skin can also be soothed by natural ingredients such as aloe vera and tea tree oil. For pains that are deeper, such as ear infections, a hot compress can provide similar relief. In most of these cases, the heat increases blood flow to the region, helping to speed up the body’s natural healing process. Another common type of pain is a toothache. This is usually caused as a result of tooth decay or gum infection. Keeping a clove in the affected area can provide soothing relief, thanks to the natural properties of this spice. Of course, serious chronic pains may require supervised medication and treatment.
