Dry Lips or Chapped Lips

Dry or chapped lips are a very common phenomenon that can occur due to various factors. The lips are covered by a very delicate membrane and there are no oil glands present in the area to provide hydration to the lips. As such the lips are prone to dryness. The habit of biting the lips or licking them aggravates the dryness and flaking of the lips.

What Causes Dry or Chapped Lips?

Lips that are dry or chapped often appear red or rough. They become sensitive and tender and may also bleed if there is too much dryness. The lips may also crack and peel. Dry weather is the most common cause of dry lips. The skin and lips becomes parched in such weather. The sun can also sap the moisture out of the lips, leaving them dry. In some cases insufficient intake of the B vitamins can also causing dryness of the lips. Licking the lips frequently keeps them coated with saliva. Saliva contains chemicals that work on the delicate membranes of the lips, causing them to become dry and tender. Smoking of cigarettes can also rob the natural moisture from the lips and leave them rough and dry.

Home Remedies for Chapped, Dry Lips

There are several natural remedies that help in keeping the lips soft and moist. These may be used on a regular basis to prevent dryness. Application of petroleum jelly is one of the most effective ways of protecting the lips from dryness. One can also apply lip balms that are made from herbs and other natural ingredients. Vitamin E oil and the gel from aloe vera leaves are beneficial in this regard. It is also advisable to use a lip balm that also serves as a sun block. This will protect the lips from the harmful effects of the radiation in sunlight. Also avoid licking and biting the lips as this can aggravate the condition. The lips require constant hydration and the best way to allow this to happen is to drink plenty of water daily. This will prevent dehydration of the body and will also aid in flushing out harmful toxins from the body. If dry weather is a major concern, using a humidifier indoors will help to keep the air moist. Cracks which develop at the corners of the lips may be indicative of vitamin B deficiencies.
