Home Remedies For Canker Sore Cures

Canker sores are small, painful mouth ulcers (also called Aphthous Stomatitis) which occur in the soft tissues inside the mouth. They may develop either on the upper throat, the base of the gum, the inside of the lips or cheeks or under the tongue. They are usually yellowish or white, circled by an inflamed redness, and look like little pustules. While the ulcer may stay for about ten days, the most painful stage lasts three to four days.

Symptoms:
They are not contagious, but they are really painful and make eating and talking very difficult. The tremendous pain may be accompanied by fever, swelling of the lymph nodes and a general feeling of listlessness.

Causes: Canker sores develop because of various reasons. While ill-fitting dental braces, rough dentures or too much vigorous brushing may cause it, it is generally due to some food allergies, stress, indigestion or deficiencies in diet, especially Vitamin B12. Sometimes it could be due to infections caused by Streptococcus sanguis or other micro-organisms. Premenstrual syndrome, pregnancy, deficiency of folic acid, and sometimes even oily or spicy like pickles could be the cause.

Home Remedies for Canker Sores:

• Make a mouthwash with lukewarm water, to which you have added a pinch of salt and another pinch of bicarbonate of soda. Gargle with it at least twice a day.

• You can also apply the juice of a raw onion on the sore.

• Aloe Vera is also effective, either as a mouthwash, or the gel derived from a fresh stem can be applied to it directly.

• Another useful mouthwash can be made by adding ¼ tsp powdered cinnamon to a cup of warm water.

• Applying a little honey and salt is also helpful.

• Soak a handful of coriander leaves in a glass of warm water. Leave for 5 minutes, then strain out the water. You can use this as an effective mouthwash.

• Another effective mouthwash to treat canker sores can be made by soaking 2 tablespoons of Marjoram in half a liter of boiling water. Leave it for 10 minutes. Strain and use it for gargling.

• When you have mouth ulcers, try and avoid toothpaste. Instead, brush your teeth with a paste made of bicarbonate of soda. Toothpaste contains ’sodium laurel sulfate’, which might worsen the condition. Brush carefully, so as to avoid hurting the sore.

• A paste made of baking soda and applied on the ulcer also provides a little relief from the pain, while at the same time, helping to dry it up faster.

• Tannic acid also helps to dry out a mouth sore. You can apply a wet tea bag over it and leave it for about 15 minutes.

• Tea Tree oil is also supposed to have healing properties. Apply a few drops of it to the sore before going to bed.

• Since nutritional deficiencies are often the cause of these sores, increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables to provide you with more vitamins and minerals.
