Brown spots, also known as age spots, are harmless brown discoloration caused on the skin by exposure to sun for a prolonged period of time. Besides this, dietary or nutritional deficiencies, or malfunction of the liver are also known to cause brown spots. Brown spots are quite a common occurrence in a person who is over 50 years of age. These spots occur on back of the hands, shoulder, arms, and any body part that has been exposed to the sun for a long time. The main reason for brown spots is over production of pigment melanin, which determines the color of a person’s skin, in certain areas of the body. Brown spots are also caused by accumulated toxins in the liver when metabolism of the body reduces with age. This causes the liver to dysfunction. They can also be caused by a lack of antioxidants in the diet or excessive oxidation in the body. It is for these reasons that brown spots must not be taken lightly, even if they are seemingly harmless.

Brown Spots Home Remedies

Since brown spots are unpleasant to look at and could become a source of annoyance to people suffering from them. As they take years to form on the skin, getting rid of them may not be a matter of days or weeks. It often takes a couple of months to treat them. Therefore prevention of brown spots is very important. And, even if they take time to heal, one can make use of natural products to get rid of brown spots. Vinegar is one product that is effective in treating brown spots and discoloration. Mix apple cider vinegar and onion juice and dab the mix with a clean cotton swab once a day, let it stay for 30 minutes and wash it off. Follow this procedure everyday for a month and a half. Or, you can mix three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a mug of water and consume it twice a day for four weeks. If you find the taste too acidic, add a tablespoon of honey to it. Applying aloe vera gel or juice and letting it stay for 45 minutes before washing it off also gets rid of the spots in a month. Rub castor oil twice a day on the age spots to treat them.

Apart from these methods, maintain a healthy diet and drink lots of water and other fluids to keep your metabolism normal. Avoid junk food, sweets, caffeine, and tobacco. Avoid overexposure to the sun and exercise regularly to sweat the toxins out of your body.
