Greasy Hair Causes

Greasy hair is a direct result of excessively oily hair which has been neglected. Sebum, the fatty oil produced by the sebaceous glands of the scalp is responsible for keeping the hair naturally moisturized. But if there is excessive production of this sebum, the hair becomes oily and tends to get dirty faster, trapping dust and other pollutants in the strands. Extreme heat and hormonal imbalances with an increase in the male hormone androgen, are the main reason for excessive production of sebum. As a result becomes greasy and lends to an un-kept and dirty appearance.

There are several simple ways to reduce the greasiness of the hair and improve the texture and appearance of the hair. The most important step is keeping the hair squeaky clean, by shampooing it regularly. As far as possible the hair should be washed every two days or whenever it gets dirty. Though it is important to keep the hair clean, shampooing daily is also not advisable since it can excessively dry the scalp which is also one of the triggers for excessive oil production. The choice of shampoo is also important when it comes to greasy hair. As far as possible, shampoos with moisturizing ingredients and harsh chemicals should be avoided. Baking soda can be added to the shampoo before washing the hair. This helps to get rid of the excessive oil produced by the scalp. It is also important to condition the hair once it has been washed, to keep it soft and shiny. A good way to reduce the production of oil by the sebaceous glands is application of astringent on the scalp around one hour before a shampoo. Alternately, a mixture of witch hazel and mouthwash can also be applied to the scalp using a cotton ball. This is excellent to control the greasiness of the hair. An excellent way to condition the hair so that it is left squeaky clean, soft and shiny is to use flat beer as a last rinse after shampooing the hair. A lemon rinse prepared by diluting the juice of 1 lemon in 1 mug of water is also excellent for reducing the oiliness of the hair. Similarly a last rinse with diluted apple cider vinegar is also beneficial for reducing the greasiness of the hairand leaving the hair soft and shiny. Finally, it is important not to brush the hair very often because that stimulates production of oil and spreads it from the scalp to the hair. It is also important to protect the hair from dust and other pollution by covering it with a scarf before stepping out. This helps to keep the hair clean and reduces the dirty greasy appearance of the hair.
