Pain is a troublesome aspect of gout. The pain occurs in the form of an attack and it is very severe and unbearable. During such an attack it is important that the patient is immediately relieved from the pain. There are several things, which can be done in order to relieve the patient. Among them medications are the best. The gout medications are most of the times successful as the pain relief measures.

Different types of gout medications are available some of them provide instant relief form pain. They are thus just temporary painkillers. Their advantage is that they provide immediate relief. On the other hand, some other gout medications are such that they not only relieve the patient from pain but they also reduce the inflammation. They are thus more beneficial as they can thus provide relief for a long time.

• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are among most commonly used gout medications. They are the drugs that are tried first whenever a patient approaches a doctor. They generally work and relieve the pain within 48 hours. However if they are not effective even after this, the dose is discontinued.

• Colchicines are other gout medications, which is very useful during an attack. They have no role in curing gout however; they are beneficial for reducing inflammation prevent gout attacks.

• Glucocorticoids also are used as gout medications. They are very useful as they can be given to the patients who cannot take colchicines or NSAIDS.

• Analgesics also are used for pain relief for the gout patients.

Preferably, the above-mentioned gout medications are given orally. However, some of them are such that it is important; to administer them through an injection over affected joint.

The gout medications relieve the patient from gout pain but there are some disadvantages or side effects as well.

• The NSAIDs can cause nausea, bleeding in stomach or intestines. Moreover, they can give rise to ulcers in the different parts of the digestive system.

• Colchicines are quite harmful as they give rise to a number of side effects. Some prominent among them are bone marrow depression, aplastic anemia, peripheral neutritis, purpura, loss of hair, myopathy, azoospermia, diarrhea, nausea etc. however anyways they have been removed from the market.

• Glucocorticoids though reduce pain also damage the healthy systems as well. some of the common side effects are suppression of the immune system, hyperglycemia, fragility of skin, reduction in the density of bone affect on the different tissues and organs as muscles, different glands etc. however most of these do not occur within the limits of  intake which is usually prescribed for gout patients.

However, all these side effects can be prevented if the gout medications under the supervision of a good doctor.
