Gout is a condition in which the body of a patient is not able to the excrete excess of the uric acid crystals from the body. Due to this, their level in the body goes up. They accumulate in the joints and give rise to problems. Therefore, in such condition it is important to reduce the intake or production of uric acid in the body in order to promote its excretion. One convenient method through which this can be done is a well planned gout diet.

The first thing gout diet should include is lots of water. Increasing the intake of water causes an increase in urination. Urination is the major path through which the uric acid is excreted from the body. Therefore, drinking more water and thus increasing urination will help in removing the excess of uric acid from the blood. Because of this, the level of uric in the blood will come down and therefore there will not be any deposition in the joints.

Apart from water some nutrients, which reduce the severity of symptoms of gout, can be include in the gout diet. The food items as cherries, berries, other fruits, and vegetable, whole grains, soybeans, seeds, seeds olive oil, seeds, cold water fish, etc, can help. Cherries are believed to be very effective and the doctors generally stress upon its consumption.

Apart from this increasing the intake of vitamin C, E helps in reducing the inflammation.  Vitamin C in addition to reducing the inflammation also helps to avoid dehydration. Apart from these, the essential nutrients for the joints and bones like calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, bone protein, etc, also is helpful for reducing the symptoms.

Then the second thing that gout diet for a patient should take care of is to maintain reduced intake of purines. Uric acid is formed by the degradation of purines. Therefore reducing the intake of purines will also reduce formation uric acid and prevent their deposition in the joints. Thus, this will reduce the gout and its symptoms. Purines are mainly present in the non-vegetarian foods as meat and seafood.

There are some other foods also which increase the chances of development of gout. These are alcohol, and other fermented foods increase the level of purines and therefore increase the severity of gout in the patient. The fermenting agents as yeast, which are used for the preparation of these substances, contain these purines.

Thus, the gout diet should include increase in the intake of substances, which remove the excess uric acid from the body, and reduction in the substances, which lead to excess production of uric acid.
