Gastritis Symptoms & Treatment

Gastritis is a common term for describing conditions where the inner lining of the stomach is inflamed. Though not a serious disease if treated in the initial stage, it can nonetheless become chronic over time. In extreme cases, chronic gastritis can lead to stomach ulcers and also prove fatal. The most common symptom of gastritis is severe pain in the upper abdomen and a persistent heaviness in the stomach. Nausea, vomiting, and lack of appetite are some other common symptoms of gastritis. There may also be a sour taste and foul smell in the mouth. Over time, heartburn, weight loss, dizziness, and headache may also show up as accompanying symptoms.

Gastritis is usually caused by a bacterial infection of the stomach. It is, however, interesting to note that Haliobacter pylori, the bacterium responsible for gastritis, reside in the stomach of a large number of people, but not everybody gets affected with gastritis. Gastritis starts when the bacteria in the stomach begin to corrode the inner mucus membrane of the intestine. Although it is not known what exactly triggers the corrosive action of bacteria in certain people, there are some factors that are usually held responsible. Eating disorders are known to be the main reason for gastritis – irregular and improper eating habits cause gastritis over time. Other known causes are – alcohol abuse, excessive use of pain-relieving drugs, stressful lifestyle, and some other digestive disorders -for example, bile reflux disease. Here are some of the common home remedies for gastritis that you may try out to get some relief.

Rice gruel: Prepare rice gruel and eat at least two servings along with a little yogurt twice a day.

Coconut water: Drink coconut water to relieve any pain, discomfort and bloating.

Potato juice: Extract the juice from raw potatoes (about half a cup) and drink 2-3 glasses everyday.

Honey: Eat a spoonful of honey everyday to get relief from gastritis pain.

If the gastritis becomes unmanageable with these home remedies, you should visit a doctor and get medical treatment. However, it is important to understand that gastritis is better treated with prevention. Adopt a few timely steps to prevent gastritis.

Eat healthy and timely: Eating disorders are the main cause of gastritis, so you’ll need to ensure that your meals are healthy. In addition to this, stick to a regular schedule for your daily meals. Don’t eat too large quantities or foods that irritate your stomach.

Don’t smoke: Smoking increases your chances of gastritis ulcer by increasing the stomach acid and corroding the protective layer inside the stomach.

Cut down on alcohol: Excessive consumption of alcohol can corrode the mucus layer inside the stomach, resulting in gastritis ulcers.

Adopt a healthy lifestyle: Cut down on stress and exercise regularly.
