Gastritis Home Remedies

Gastritis is an illness of the stomach. It is quite a common illness, and effects most people at some point in their lives. The symptoms of gastritis are vomiting, severe stomach ache, a loss of one’s appetite, and physical weakness.

Our digestive system secretes various acids and enzymes to help in the digestion of food. Sometimes, due to bad eating habits, excessive consumption of alcohol, smoking, and eating very spicy food, our stomach is forced to secrete an excessive amount of these enzymes and acids to cope with the increased load. One of the acids that our digestive system secretes is hydrochloric acid. This acid, when present in unusually high quantities starts to corrode the mucus lining, causing it to swell. This causes the burning sensation a patient experiences when suffering from gastritis.

The causes of gastritis are varied and multiple, and remedies for the condition primarily consist of eliminating the causes. As mentioned above, excessive consumption of alcohol is a major reason for gastritis and should be avoided. As with most digestive diseases, an unhealthy diet also plays a key role in the cause of gastritis. Our modern day lifestyles force us to consume more fast/junk food than our stomach can safely handle. Most of these foods are low in quality and contain little or no nutrients. Besides, to make them attractive looking and tasty, various artificial colors and taste-enhancers are added. Most of these are harmful for our stomach. It is essential for a person suffering from gastritis to have a light diet. It is recommended that you eat leafy veggies and consume plenty of fruits. Fruits are rich in anti-oxidants and fiber and help to clean out the digestive system. If you keep longs hours because of work or socializing, you might want to put this on hold and get plenty of rest. Eat healthy, rest, and avoid tobacco and alcohol.

There are also several home remedies that you can use to ease the symptoms of gastritis. Most of the ingredients needed to treat gastritis are readily available in our kitchens. Curd or yogurt has been used as an effective cure for gastritis for centuries. A cup full of curd eaten with a teaspoon of black salt is recommended. Butter milk also serves the same purpose. One can also eat dried figs, or soak them in warm water for a few minutes and then drink the water they were soaked in. Finley chopped turmeric leaves mixed with milk is also very effective in curing gastritis.
