Fungal Infections And Childhood
There are a variety of fungi, from the harmless edible mushroom, to the variety we are concerned with. Fungus in this context refers to a kind of germ that thrives in our bodies. It is mostly harmless, but can sometimes cause problems that we refer to as a fungal infection. Fungal infections are in fact a lot more common than most of us are aware, but they are quite easy to treat. The severity and seriousness of these infections varies, and is largely determined by the advancement of the infection. The longer you delay treatment and neglect the infection the more persistent it becomes and the harder the treatment. If treated promptly however the condition can be resolved very swiftly and effectively.
Most of us are unaware of the fact that fungal infections are quite common among kids. The reason that kids are so susceptible to fungal infections is because of the fact that fungal infections are contagious. Kids spend a lot of time playing and in close proximity to others of their age group, whether at school, a day care or in the neighborhood. This means that they are subjected to a greater amount of contact with a larger number of people, making it easy for a fungal infection to catch on, as they spread from person to person.
Fungi thrive in dark, warm, and moist conditions, which is why there is a higher chance of picking up an infection in a public shower, a locker room, or a pool. Shoes and socks also offer the perfect environment. Another reason why your kid could develop a fungal infection is because of antibiotics. They are often prescribed for illnesses to get rid of harmful germs and bacteria, but they also destroy the ‘good bacteria’, necessary for fighting of certain infections, like a yeast infection. In some cases fungal infections may also strike kids suffering from immune system disorders.
Preventive measures are the best treatment so here are some points to keep in mind:
1) Make sure that the feet are always kept dry, particularly between the toes.
2) Discourage your kids from walking barefoot in locker rooms or public pools.
3) Always wear clean socks, as damp socks are just an invitation to a fungal infection.
4) Anti-fungal powder dusted on the feet before donning any footwear will not only prevent infection, but also reduce the perspiration.
5) Undergarments should always be kept clean and dry, and cotton is preferable to other fabrics.
