Foot Fungal Infection

Foot fungal infections are generally classified into 2 main types of foot fungus: Infection of the toenails (onychomycosis) or infection of the skin (Athlete’s foot) which is relatively much easier to get rid of.

Both types of foot fungus result from the organism invading and multiplying on the foot. The fungus feeds on the nutrients from keratin, a protein found in skin cells and nails. While it breaks down the keratin, the skin becomes flaky and scaly, while the nails get discolored and crumble.

Here, we will take a closer look at both of these infections, their symptoms, and some age old remedies to help cure them with ingredients that are easily available.

We will start with the more common and easily curable athlete’s foot. Quite often, people suffering from athlete’s foot will start to experience an itch between the toes. They will also notice a redness in the skin, as well as the scaling that was previously mentioned. The affected area will later develop blisters and cracks. Scratching or touching the affected area will often cause the skin to open up, which will allow the fungus to enter deeper into the skin, thus worsening the condition.

Here are some simple remedies that could help take care of this condition:

1. Prepare a solution of one part vinegar and four parts warm water. Soak your feet into this solution for about half an hour, twice a day.

2. Tea tree oil is known to help considerably with athlete’s foot as well. Add about 40 drops of the oil to a liter of water, soak your feet in this solution for about 10 minutes, dry your feet with a towel or hairdryer – but make sure there is no moisture left over, especially in between the toes – and then apply another few drops of the oil to the affected region.

Toenail Fungus Home Remedy

Toenail fungus is very easy to diagnose as the affected nails turn yellow or brown in color. At times the nail becomes very thick and overgrown making it very uncomfortable to wear shoes. Some remedies that would help treat this are described below:

1. Apply undiluted tea tree oil with olive oil to the affected toenail.

2. Mix 2 drops of oregano oil with 1 teaspoon of olive oil and apply this over the affected area for not more than 3 weeks. Oregano contains a number of antiseptic, antibacterial, anti parasitical, antiviral, analgesic and antifungal properties.

3. Soak the toes in mouthwash; this is also very effective as the antiseptic leaves your nails clean and healthy.
