Exercise for Eyes

Most of us will suffer from some kind of eye vision disorder at some point in our lives. In many of these cases, these vision problems are linked to weakness of the supporting muscles and nerves. Each eyeball requires many muscles to roll around in different directions and to focus on different distances. Some of these muscles grow weak with constant usage over the years, leading to difficulties with focusing on either short or long distances. However, some medical experts argue that eye muscles can be kept healthy in the same way as other muscles, by exercise.

How to Relax Eyes

Start by avoiding a fixed gaze for long periods of time. The muscles that focus the eyeballs get tired if “locked” in a particular position. It is advisable to take little “eye breaks” every fifteen minutes or so, especially if you are in a situation that requires hours of same-distance focus such as working on computers. Look at objects that are at different distances to allow the eye muscles to flex in different positions. This reduces strain and can help you avoid eye vision problems associated with fatigued eye muscles. Another popular eye exercise allows the muscles to strengthen their ability to zoom in and out. It starts by holding a pencil at arm’s length and concentrating on its tip. The pencil is then slowly brought closer to the face until it is impossible to focus on it. Then reverse the exercise, zooming out. Repeating this a few times can help with distance-related vision problems. Another way to challenge eye muscles is by tracing imaginary figure of eights on a wall that is around 5 yards away. While these general exercises can help everyone, it is advisable to visit a functional (or behavioral) optometrist who can recommend eye exercises for specific vision problems.

You should also ensure that the eyes are rested, healthy, and safe from infections such as conjunctivitis. A great way to soothe tired eyes is to warm them up. Warmth helps to increase blood circulation in a given area, invigorating the cells. Simply rub your palms together until they feel warm and gently cup your closed eyes for a few seconds. Blinking rapidly also helps to provide the eyes with some relief and helps the lubricating tears cleanse away any grime. These eye tears are a saline solution that contains enzymes and antibodies to destroy most bacteria. You can also buy over-the-counter artificial tears that have similar properties to natural tears. These are helpful in periodically flushing away the eyeballs and keeping them clean, well lubricated, and safe.
