Symptoms of Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a digestive disorder that causes loose, watery stools, more than thrice a day. It is caused by a parasitic, bacterial or viral infection that attacks the digestive system and is the body’s way of eliminating the microbes responsible for the infection naturally. Unsanitary conditions, food poisoning, food intolerance, diseases of the digestive tract and certain medication can also be responsible for diarrhea. The most common symptoms of diarrhea are extremely soft stools, bloating, cramps in the lower abdomen and minimal control over the excretory system. If the condition is accompanied by fever, if the pain persists or if the stools are streaked with blood, visiting a doctor is recommended at the earliest as this could be an indicator of an underlying illness like dysentery or cholera. Acute diarrhea is also indicative of a ruptured appendix.

Treatment and Home Remedies For Diarrhea

Diarrhea leads to a proportionately large loss of fluids from the body. Hence, it is essential to replace this loss by consuming plenty of fluids, especially water, to prevent dehydration. Supplementing water with electrolytes is recommended for restoring the electrolyte balance in the body. Coconut water, being rich in electrolytes and other essential nutrients, is suitable for the treatment of diarrhea. It strengthens the immune system, aids digestion and regulates the functioning of the intestines. Carrot soup prevents bacterial growth and nausea and vomiting that may accompany diarrhea. The intake of milk and milk products like butter, buttermilk and cheese should be avoided because diarrhea can lead to the temporary depletion of the enzyme lactase that is essential for the digestion of milk. Yogurt is the only known milk product that helps in eliminating the germs responsible for the loose, watery stools due to its ability to kill harmful microbes. The pectin present in apples assists in stopping diarrhea. Pomegranates have the ability to reduce weakness and fatigue caused by diarrhea. Drinking herbal tea to which a few drops of chamomile oil has been added relieves pain, prevents cramps and reduces inflammation. Chewing a piece of ginger dipped in honey also helps in reducing pain, cramps and indigestion. Honey kills the pungency of ginger while promoting quick recovery due to its antimicrobial and antiseptic qualities.

People suffering from diarrhea should avoid oily, spicy food, caffeine, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners. Light meals, especially in the form of salads and baked or boiled foods, are recommended as they are easy to digest. Getting adequate rest will ensure that the body recuperates at a faster pace.
