Constipation is usually an ailment associated with improper eating habits. It happens when the diet does not contain adequate fiber. Therefore, the treatment of constipation has to begin with a change of diet. Eat lots of fibrous foods like green leafy vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. In addition, since dehydration makes constipation worse, you will also need to ensure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid non fibrous and high fat foods. Cheese, pasta, fries, and confectioneries should be restricted as far as possible. Processed foods, canned items, and other junk foods should also be avoided. Instead, you should eat freshly prepared foods that contain enough dietary fiber. Salads and raw fruits are good sources of dietary fiber and should be eaten regularly. As far as possible, shift your diet from animal or meat items to plant-based items.

There are quite a few known home remedies that are helpful for treating constipation. Eat prunes and raisins regularly every morning. They are rich in fiber content and also act as natural laxatives. You should soak prunes and raisins overnight and eat them in the morning on empty stomach. The water you soak them in should also be drunk. In case the raisins and prunes were not soaked overnight, you can put them in lukewarm water for about 15 minutes, let them become a little plump, and then eat them. Drink the water in this case as well. Potassium is another known treatment for chronic constipation. Eat vegetables and fruits that are rich in potassium content. Among vegetables broccoli and spinach are good sources of potassium. Among fruits grapes and pineapples contain good amount of potassium. Other fruits like pear, guava, papaya, and orange also help bowel movement significantly. If you still don’t seem to get enough dietary fiber from your foods, you should consider taking psyllium husk supplements. Psyllium husk is excellent is an excellent source of dietary fiber and is easily available at neighborhood drug stores. Soak psyllium husk in warm water and drink up the mixture every morning on empty stomach. This is known to be a very effective remedy for constipation.

Besides these natural cures, you should also make some changes in your lifestyle to effectively treat constipation. Cut down on stress, eat nutritious food, sleep well, relax adequately, and do some mild exercises daily. Regular exercise is very helpful in dealing with constipation because an inactive body increases the chances of constipation.
