Cirrhosis of liver
Cirrhosis of the Liver occurs when the human liver becomes diseased. It is characterized by an inflammatory stage followed by scarring of the liver. If the scarring continues, ie, the disease itself is allowed to progress then the texture of the liver looses its sponginess, gradually becomes flaccid and shrinks in size. When this happens the scarring tissues block the flow of blood through the liver thus slowing down its functioning process. If untreated, the liver would become simply useless and could result into fatality.
But before that could happen, cirrhosis of the liver could also lead to what is known as portal hypertension. Since now the flow of blood into the liver is restricted or blocked, the portal vein (the vein that carries blood from the digestive organ to the liver) is under too much pressure and often gives rise to the development of other veins across the esophagus and stomach known as Varices. More often then not the varices become fragile and can result into bleeding.
Cirrhosis of the liver occurs due to the following reasons:

  • Excessive abuse of alchahol.
  • Excessive abuse of certain drugs.
  • Viral infection or Hepatitis especially of the B and C variety.
  • Simply for causes unknown or idiopathic.
