Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Symptoms and Treatments
What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a debilitating disease that affects a small portion of humanity. This is a disease that has no definitive cure because the medical world does not understand the disease itself and why it happens. To date, the symptoms and possible causes have been observed and there have been some inferences made about the disorder. However when it comes to a definitive cure, there is no real consensus yet these have shown some promise to sufferers of this disease.
Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome and immune deficiency syndrome appear in a small number of older adults and rarely in children and teenagers. The disease has been observed to occur after a major viral or bacterial infection. The disorder is also called post-viral fatigue syndrome for this very reason and because most of the time, the onset of the disease is marked by a fever like influenza after which the symptoms of chronic fatigue symptom manifest. The disorder is so widespread that it affects cognition, muscles, joints, and presents other symptoms that resemble the end-stages of certain disease like AIDS and renal failure. Most patients of this disease experience fatigue to the point of almost not being able to get out of bed or a reduced energy level; impaired memory and an inability to get refreshed after sleep is also a problem that most sufferers face. Considering the type of symptoms that one faces, there is no corresponding evidence of immediate atrophy or nerve damage that cause this disease. Some of the theories that abound about the reasons for the disorder’s onset are decreased thyroid function, anemia and diabetes. However, the mystery of this disease continues to deflect most theories like these even because the disease mechanism does not necessarily indicate that these cause chronic fatigue disorder.
Treatment For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Some of the only effective treatments for this disorder is the administration of anti-depressants and painkillers as medication while at the same time a treatment form called cognitive behavioral therapy as well as graded exercise therapy. This basically involves mentally awakening the patient’s mind slowly. The objective of this therapy is to alleviate dysfunction in mood, emotion, behavior, and intellect through therapy. Graded exercise therapy is a form of exercise routine in which people do little exercises everyday and gradually increase the level of activity with each milestone. This type of therapy awakens the body to return to physical wellness. There isn’t enough medical data to show that these therapies completely cure chronic fatigue syndrome; however, the rates of recovery of patients who do undergo this therapy is higher than those who do not.
