Diarrhea in Child
If a small child has developed the problem of diarrhea for some reason, the first step that needs to be taken is to ensure that the child does not become dehydrated. This is usually the first fallout of diarrhea. Make sure that the child is being given water regularly, and in this case, it does not at all matter what the age of the child is. Even infants can be given water if they are suffering from diarrhea. One of the best ways to control the problem of diarrhea is to add a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of sugar to a liter of water and keep giving the child this to sip. While this may not necessarily stop the loose motions, it will at least help to preserve the electrolytes that are lost along with the fluid from the body. It is essential that this fluid be restored because otherwise the condition of the child can simply worsen. Other fluids that may be administered which will restore electrolytes and not allow it to get flushed away would be things like chicken broth, vegetable broth and soups made with these broths as a base. If the child is already taking solids and is over 6 months old, all of these fluids may be given to the child. It is also good to remember that the child may not want to take anything, which is also a common sign of any illness, particularly in very small children. In such a case, the child may have to be administered the fluid gently but forcefully. It is essential to ensure that the child takes in some fluid every hour or so.
There are also a few other ways to stop the stools from flowing out. Dried and roasted anise seeds are particularly helpful in helping to firm up the stools. They can be powdered and mixed with equal amounts of sugar. It is important to note that these may be given to the child only if it is able to eat and drink. If the child is too young, this mixture can be administered as a paste made with a small amount of water. Since it is sweet in taste, it will be easy enough for the child to take it without too much of a fuss. If it lasts beyond a couple of weeks, diarrhea is a dangerous condition and it requires prompt medical help at once.
