What are Chilblains?

Chilblains is a condition typically associated with extremely cold weather. This response is on account of small blood vessels having an irregular reaction (usually lumps which itch) when the skin is exposed to cold temperatures. It is easy to associate this condition only with really cold countries but the fact remains that this abnormal reaction is also possible also in temperate humid weather. This is the case when there is exposure to cold in such climate. In this case, you would have chilblains setting in some hours following this irregular exposure. The problem is a result of rapid warming of one’s skin following exposure. To explain further, your skin has a number of small blood vessels which tend to constrict when you are cold. The natural response therefore is to immediately warm yourself once you get out of the cold. However, if your skin is forced to warm itself again too fast, what happens is that blood tends to be leaked such that it gets into one’s tissues. This is because your blood vessels are simply not able to respond in time to your warming yourself again. Because of this process, chilblains occur and these can be painful. Thus, even though people tend to think that chilblains are something that people in extreme cold face, the truth is that these countries do not really have to deal with a lot of chilblains complaints since the air in such cold countries is drier. Furthermore both the clothing available and the kinds of living situations there are more protective. Even though this abnormal reaction is common in people who have a normal blood circulation, it is more often seen in people who usually have poor circulation. Thus, those who are a lot older face the problem of chilblains because they tend to have poorer circulation. Some professions, such as the butcher’s profession, see a lot more complains since they tend to function under cold conditions.

Treatment, Cure for Chilblains

Treatment for chilblains would include some preventive as well as curative measures. Remember to avoid factors which could cause chilblains such as damp living conditions. Since chilblains are also linked to poor nutrition, one’s diet has to reflect healthier choices. Get your vitamins and minerals from choice sources like fruits and healthy vegetables. You might find that prevention of chilblains follows common sense like choosing shoes that are not too tight. Gentle exercise and massages could help chilblains since circulation picks up. Witch hazel is good and is often used to soothe chilblains. Consult your doctor if faced with this skin reaction.
